Activate and Designate Duplicate Rule for Matching Leads to Existing Contacts

On the Admin Panel, under Lead Conversion, click the link called Click here to configure Duplicate Rule for identifying leads with duplicate contacts or go to Setup > Duplicate Rules.

You will need to activate either the Standard Rule for Leads with Duplicate Contacts or a custom version of it that you may have already created by cloning it.

  • Before you can activate the Duplicate Rule, you must activate the Matching Rule to which it is connected; you can find the Matching Rule by opening the Duplicate Rule (shown below).
  • You must uncheck both of the “Alert” boxes on the Duplicate Rule, because these will prevent the Lead Conversion and Touch Point Configuration functions from working.
  • You must select “Bypass sharing rules” under “Record-Level Security” so that the rule has access to all Contacts when searching for matching records
Important:
If you have any Lead Duplicate Rules activated, make certain that their Alert checkboxes are unchecked; otherwise no Touch Points will be created for second or subsequent Leads matching the same Contact, because the Alert will prevent such (“duplicate”)* Leads from being created.

*”Duplicate” is in quotation marks because, although such matching Leads would result in duplicate Contacts if they were both converted, each of the Lead records may contain valuable information not contained in the other one. It is the function of Touch Points to capture this valuable information and attach it to the Contact in the form of a Touch Point record.
